I dreamt about Daniel that night; a bright, vivid scene which I could only remember in fading patches when I awoke: lying alone, sweaty, and frustrated. The definite tingle between my thighs pissed me off and added to my frustration. I didn’t want to want Daniel and everything which he represented, but I did.
Sex without love, without any sort of relationship; was I capable of that? Could I take advantage of the passion between us and still remain detached? Caitlin looked up at the knock on her hospital room door. It was nearly three a.m., and she doubted that it was a nurse checking in on her. She gave Jack a nervous glance. He was squeezed onto her hospital bed with her, holding her in an attempt to soothe her worries after the eventful evening.
He rubbed her arm reassuringly. “It’s okay, baby, I’m here.” To the visitor, he called, “Come in!”
The door swung open slowly. Shanna was standing there, her blue-green eyes looking down at the white, tiled floor. She was wearing red cotton pants with little white hearts scattered over them, a pair of white flipflops, and a white, spaghetti-strap, tight tank top. I have always thought that Betty had a lot of balls to do what she did. Big brass ones. I was at least 20 years younger than Betty and I don’t think I had ever exhibited any attraction toward her. She was just another pleasant acquaintance in the workplace. But, like so many of the remarkable women who have graced my life, she knew what she wanted and she had the inner confidence to go for it.
I had known her for about two years prior to that fateful evening. Betty was the court reporter for all general courts-martial (or felony cases) in my military district and, as the senior defense counsel in the jurisdiction, that was where I practiced my art most often. Natalie just turned over in my slightly undersized bed, facing the wall and using her butt to push me out. Hey, lady, I’m tired, too. Nine o’clock, eleven o’clock, three o’clock — who did she think I was, Superman? I had to admit, though, it was my house. If either of us were going to answer the door at this hour, it should probably be me. I sighed, slipped out of the covers, and pulled on my shorts. My warm-hearted husband has always had a habit of picking up strays. I suppose that’s one of the endearing things that attracted me to Donny in the first place. However, throughout the past 30-plus years, I can’t count all the wayward dogs, cats, and even rabbits he “adopted” and I ended up nursing back to health. Thank goodness we were lucky to eventually find loving homes for these lost souls, or our house would resemble a zoo. Now that we’re in our fifties, and basically empty-nesting, I figure my days of playing Florence Nightingale to his Father Flanagan were over. Apparently I figured wrong. We had just gotten back from our trip to Mexico. Well not just, we did go to her place for sex first. Sitting next to her on the plane for hours had left me hopelessly horny and she wasn’t much better off. Normally we spent hours in bed screwing each other to the point of exhaustion when given the chance, but tomorrow was our last full day until her daughter Jessica returned from visiting her father.
